In June we will be holding three general education and ETEAL scoring events. As part of our continuing general education assessment and improvement efforts, we will be looking at students’ skills in Written Communication and Information Literacy. As part of our ETEAL evaluation and improvement process, we will be looking at students’ skills in Critical Reflections on their applied learning experience.

We are inviting ALL campus instructors, and encouraging those teaching courses in the following components of University Studies, to participate in scoring sample student work products: Writing Intensive, Information Literacy, and Explorations Beyond the Classroom. Approximately 36 scorers are needed across the three sessions. You do not need to have experience in scoring using a rubric; all that’s required is the willingness to participate and to learn about the process and about our students. We would like to get broad representation from all schools and colleges, and the departments within them, and if we hear from more than 36 people (which is likely), selection will be based on creating that broad representation and including both new and experienced participants.

Each scorer will be required to participate in both Part 1 and Part 2 of an event:

Part 1: An in-person session at which we will review the rubric and conduct norming activities, and you will begin scoring with a partner. Lunch will be provided.
Part 2: Completion of the scoring of student work on your own (approximately 5 hours)—work to be completed and materials received in our office by Friday, June 28.

Each scorer will be asked to provide feedback on the process and rubrics for continual program improvement. As thanks and to compensate for your time and effort, each scorer will receive a $500 stipend.

The events are:

Written Communication
Thursday, June 6 8:00 – 1:00 (lunch served from 12-1)
Take-home scoring will be due on Friday, June 28.

Information Literacy
Thursday, June 6 12:00 – 5:00 (lunch served from 12-1)
Take-home scoring will be due on Friday, June 28.

Critical Reflection
Tuesday, June 18 10:00 – 3:00 (lunch will be served)
Take-home scoring will be due on Friday, June 28.

Please consider participating in this important service to the university and the learning of our students. It’s clear from the feedback of previous participants that you will likely enjoy the opportunity to discuss student learning with colleagues from across the institution and learn more about our students’ abilities. If you cannot participate this semester, there will be opportunities in the future. Results from this semester will be available during the 2019-2020 academic year.

If you are interested in being considered for one of the scoring events, please complete the form below. You can expect to hear if you have been selected no later than Friday, May 24.
